Alison Piper

Alison Piper, who died in December 2006, was the external evaluator for the Subject Centre for Languages, Linguistics and Area Studies. Her friend Philippa Dolphin remembers her in an article published in today's Guardian.

I was very upset to hear this news. It has only just reached me (March 2007) via Philippa Dolphin's contribution to The Guardian.

Alison worked closely with me at Ealing College in the 1980s-1990s. We collaborated on a number of ICT projects and ran many ICT training sessions for language teachers, which was part of the brief of the National Centre for Computer Assisted Learning (NCCALL), which I headed at that time. She will be sadly missed.

This is all the more poignant as I too have been diagnosed with cancer, a very rare form known as pseudomyxoma peritonei. I had major surgery in March 2006, from which I recovered quickly. Right now I am fit and well but being watched carefully.
